Thats the hidden secret of buying second hand turbos.
A turbine wheel can look absoloutely flawless from the outside, with the casings on. Many people dont even know that the turbines extend behind the casing, and are invisible without taking the exhaust cover off. As somebody said, The something has come flying out of the motor and straight into the turbine, probably bits of a piston or half a valve etc, ---- like that. If anything ever gets brought in here, the damage will 99.99% of the time be in that area, and invisible when the turbine is assembled.
A new wheel should get you going fine, But I would get the shaft checked, balanced, and the bearings too because its a fair ammount of force thats been applied to it after something like this.
I have personally seen a turbo in which a spanner got inside the compressor wheel, God knows how.... But anyway. The wheel looked perfectly fine with the comp cover on, but when it was taken off the outside of the blades were completely shredded. The Spanner was recovered too, but it was bent to the circumferance of the compressor wheel
