Re:how many of you have houses?
my finace and i bought a house in december.
our payments are high because we couldnt afford a good downpayment. but our loan rate is 5.8%, which is reasonable, and our house appraised at 132,000 and we paid 122,000 for it... only thing is its a townhouse, and we have attached neighbors, but i have my 1.5-2 car garage and i can change my oil now heh...
its a good feeling owning a home and building equity, but the $930 payments are rough. (paid 730 rent for 2b 2b 3rd story 1000 sq ft apt)
our house is cool its 2 stories, and has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, and we just bought a leather sofa and love seat! its cool to have a house!

Re:how many of you have houses?
I thought about buying a house a few years ago, but I don't want to live in this town. A house would tie be down to this shithole and I don't want to be stuck here. If I would have bought a house when I wanted to I could have made a nice chunck of money by now, but ---- it. I like handing $500 over every month for building someone elses equity.

Homeowner here as well! I am building my shop as we speak! Well, not me personally right now, there are some peanut workers laying the foundation, but i will do the framing and up! It is really nice, I bought a bank forclosure so i got it about 25k under the appraised price, and since my wifey works at home depot, i got a homie hookup.

I own a home. My fiance and I built it a couple years ago. Doing this around 2001 you could've saved alot of money; but now all the construction materials are going to Iraq so wood and such has gone up in price about 250%. A good idea if you are handy is to get in touch with a real estate broker who is licensed by the government to sell HUD repo'd homes. Often they are kinda trashed but you can get them for 30%-50% less than they're worth. Spend several month's worth of weekends fixin' her up and either live in it for a while, or sell it.
You can also buy apartments (single units, depending on where you are) for $30,000-$40,000. Your mortgage payments on a dig like that will be less than $300 per month. :P If you have a job you can afford that, and you won't be putting money in someone else's pocket.
