The world trade centers did not fall down because of the planes hitting them. It was the extreme heat from the enormous amount of jet fuel burning that melted the steel girders that make up the structure of the buildiings. That steel is only so strong, and its strength greatly decreases with an extreme increase in heat. Obviously, the original designers never gave a thought that something like this could occur. The steel heated up, passed the point of its yield strength, and started to plastically deform, at which point it was basically all over because it could no longer support the weight of the floors above.
